How to reach us

From Buenos Aires, you can get to the Valdes Peninsula either by plane or by car. If you choose to fly, Aerolineas Argentinas is the main airline that flies from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn. The closest airport to Puerto Madryn is just a 2-hour flight away, making it a convenient way to reach the peninsula.

If you prefer to drive, you can travel from Buenos Aires to the peninsula by car or bus. The journey takes about 12 hours and is a promising way to experience Argentina's stunning landscape.

When is the best time to travel?

So when is the best time to visit this incredible destination? Well, the answer largely depends on what type of wildlife you are hoping to spot.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the famous Magellanic penguins, the best time to visit the Valdés Peninsula is between the end of September and mid-March. During this time, the penguins are on the move and can be admired up close.

The summer months (December to February) are ideal for observing the majestic elephant seals. During this time, the elephants gather in large numbers near the coast and can often be spotted from the shore.

Between June and December the majestic southern right whales come to the peninsula.

Wildlife watching on the Valdés Peninsula

The peninsula offers spectacular landscapes, amazing animal and bird species and an extensive coastline that is ideal for whale watching and boat trips.

The Peninsula Valdes is a true nature reserve and has a variety of attractions and activities to offer.

One of the highlights of Valdes is the colony of Magellanic penguins located at Punta Tombo. Just a few kilometers north of Puerto Madryn is Punta Norte, where the Magellanic penguins settle during the breeding season.

Another highlight is the El Doradillo nature reserve, which is located at the southern end of the peninsula. Here you can watch dolphins and whales and, depending on the season, take a boat trip to the various beaches. Another attraction is Puerto Piramides, about 5 km north of Puerto Madryn. Here you can go whale watching and enjoy the beauty of the wildlife and the landscape.

You can observe various animal and bird species, such as elephant seals, guanacos, maras, armadillos and various bird species, such as burrowing owls. You will also find various plant species that are typical of the Patagonian fauna.

Sea lions of Peninsula Valdes

Punta Norte, a headland in the north of the peninsula, is an ideal place to see sea lions. Around 1000 seals live here and can be seen lounging on the rocks at low tide. Caleta Valdes, a small cove, is another place to see sea lions. Here you can see a colony of elephant seals that stay on the shore during the day.
